Fight. Die. Repeat. You are the Box Knight. By day, you work 9 to 5, crunching the numbers, but after 5 pm the darkness falls upon the once-wonderful office, and it is up to you to bring it back into the light. You’ll have to brawl through a monster-infested office, floor by floor, boss by boss.

The office was once a bright place full of camaraderie. The bosses and employees respected each other, and the work was a breeze. That was until evil took over and turned it into a toxic workplace. The story isn’t the main focus of Box Knight; it’s the gameplay, but the introduction is enough to give you cause to fight the evil blighting the office.
The gameplay reminded me of older games like Streets of Rage crossed with The Binding Of Issac, the classic beat em ups, with a roguelike twist. As with most roguelikes, the loop is what hooks you in, with each new run pushing you to go further. Box Knight is one of those games that has you popping on for 5 minutes, but a quick session can turn into hours. As you progress, you’ll learn different strategies and pick up new weapons and power-ups. These power-ups will add stat changes that aid you on your adventure against the evil monsters. You’ll soon find your favourite build, as I did, that gets you through the office floors with ease. The enemies you come up against ain’t no walk in the park; you’ll have to strategise to see what works best against them. It is quite difficult at first, but once you learn about the builds and how to maximise your strategy, you’ll be saving the office in no time.
Everything is displayed in a comic book-like fashion, which adds to the overall theme. The music aids you in your office liberation adventure perfectly; the adrenaline aids you in combat against evil, toxic enemies hell-bent on ruining your work life.
Verdict
Box Knight is only £12, £10 on sale till September 8th. What you’re buying here is full of action, laughs and thrills. It’s a little game with an addictive loop that hooks you in from the moment you start it up. You’ll soon find yourself on run 45 and wondering why it’s dark outside.
