Snake: Gridbreaker, developed by Arkadiusz Włodarczyk and published by GEM Games, is due to be released on November 3rd 2026, on Steam. Arkadiusz Włodarczyk was kind enough to let us play the game early; here’s what we thought.

In Snake: Gridbreaker, you are alone; there is no tutorial. You are trapped in the grid and must escape. The loop wants to keep you in by any means necessary; how you escape is up to you. In the original Snake, the objective was to eat apples, grow, avoid walls and avoid yourself. This time, however, is different; it’s now life or death. To win, you’ll have to cheat the system, beat it at its own game. Each run is different; you must learn, adapt and dominate to break out of the loop!

Features:
🐍It’s Snake, but not as you know it!
👟Each run is different from the last; you must learn and fight your way out of the loop!
🎯Enemies will hunt you down during your break for freedom.
⛰️Biomes will change everything about the game, throwing new things at you as you progress.
🔋Power-ups to help you against the loop.

In Snake: Gridbreaker, you’re thrown into a labyrinth with an ominous voice that constantly belittles you, saying that you will not escape. It is unclear why you’re stuck, but you know the objective is to escape. As you delve deeper, you find this voice getting more impatient, trying to knock you off the path, but what does escape mean?
The gameplay starts fairly simple: you’ll need to find a key to escape and pick up food to increase the points earned at the end of the round. Once you gather enough points, you can upgrade your snake as you go, making you even more powerful. As in most roguelikes, the more you progress, the more options unlock and the harder it becomes. Each run is vastly different from the next, which offers a lot of replayability. I liked the variety offered; it gave me new ideas on how to tackle the game and ultimately escape the loop. I found the systems to be pretty fair and challenging at the same time.
Snake: Gridbreaker offers an addictive and unique twist on the classic Snake formula, and it works incredibly well. I enjoyed it a ton; people who like Snake or roguelikes will love this one. The mystery drives you forward; that human curiosity rears its head, leaving you wanting to find out more. If you like what you’re seeing, wishlist it!
