Necesse, (yes I’m not sure how you pronounce that either) developed by Fair Games ApS, has received a big update during its early access period that has upgraded the graphics and added a wealth of more content. Necesse is available on Steam now in early access and is currently having a free weekend and a massive sale to celebrate this new milestone. You can view the game HERE.
What is Necesse? Necesse is an action RPG adventure game that lets players build, quest and conquer across an infinite procedurally generated world. You can either go it alone or with friends and establish a settlement, explore deep dungeons, fight monsters and bosses, mine rare orders, craft magical equipment, recruit specialists for your colony and more.

Necesse is a game that truly feels quite endless immediately from the start you’re let loose in the world with an informational tutorial that will show you through the basics. After the tutorial, you’ll get thrown into the game with many different decisions to make, will you become an avid explorer who tries to discover different civilisations, interesting biomes, and strange characters across the lands? Or perhaps dungeon crawling might be more your thing in which you’ll come across a variety of treasures to aid you on your journey. If you want to create your town with people who do jobs to keep the cogs turning, you can do just that. Necesse doesn’t force you on a set path it lets you become who you want to be, I truly loved that freedom.

Necesse is a procedurally generated game so each playthrough is different, if you feel that the world you are in is finished with you can move on to the next with the same characters and pull your items across, which makes for a lot of replayability. Items are key to survival in Necesse upgrading is always the best choice to progress forward and with such a huge selection of items to collect and craft you can truly customise your character how you want. If you want to go for a ranged hunter-style build you can, a wizard. Go for it, or you can take my approach of being a tanky warrior with a sword and vampire cape that drains health it offers so much choice. Among the different lands are many inhabitants you can interact with them in a few ways, trading, hiring for your party or recruiting them for your settlement sadly, I feel though the NPC interactions do need expanding upon because there’s not much else you can do besides the trading and hiring, it would be nice conversations with them in a deeper way. The developers are going to be working on that for a future update which is great for the game. However there is a ton of content to explore, I loved going deep into the dungeons and finding different layouts and styles that go hand in hand with enemy types and discovering some cool new items to play with.

Necesse’s big new feature is its massive graphics update. Previously, the game did look good on the PC, but this update gave it the glow-up it truly deserved, it has upgraded the design up hugely, and it looks great. It gives Stardew Valley and Terraria vibes, which were huge behemoths in the indie scene I feel that this update brings Necesse to that level. Everything has unique designs from the enemy mobs, bosses, biomes and more, and it is interesting to discover and encourages exploration to check out what the game has to offer. During your adventure, you’ll hear all sorts of different themed music that fits its pixel style perfectly. However, I think it could use a little more variety even in its different biomes, as it seems to be one track per level that repeats.

Verdict
Necesse is a game full of many possibilities it is one full of different ways to play and just keeps getting better as you go. I feel Necesse will only get better with more updates. If you want to play now and try it out for free, you can do so this weekend on the 25th of January 2025. The game is also on sale for a cheap £8.44, if you fall in love with it over the weekend and decide to buy it you can take your save games over with you and continue on your daring adventure into the wildness. Neccese is Steam Deck Verified and works a treat on both Desktop PC and Steam Deck. I didn’t run into any bugs or issues, this game is polished very well. I look forward to the future of Necesse and also finding out if I’m pronouncing it properly.
