Squirrel With A Gun developed by Dee Dee Creations and published by Maximum Entertainment is now available on PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S.

Squirrel With A Gun is a video game that doesn’t take itself too seriously when you first enter you’re greeted with pure comedy gold which shows you what you are about to experience throughout the playthrough. You start as a squirrel in a testing facility after performing some tests to get the golden acorn. An agent runs in and once the hilarious cutscene has played the squirrel gets a hold of a gun to take him down. This is where the game truly starts, you are lost in an open world with a gun and a mission to get all the gold acorns. Squirrel With A Gun is a Platformer, Puzzle, Action game with a unique comedic twist think Spyro meets Goat Simulator. You must get as many collectables as possible to keep unlocking new items, such as cosmetics to customise your squirrel and help with progression, weapons to take down the evil agents and their bosses, and photo filters.

Players will journey across the open world performing different puzzles and challenges such as somehow coming up with ways to make sure party guests get a cooked cheeseburger, or having a shootout at a western saloon down the street. All these challenges unlock different things to aid you on your journey forward as Agent Squirrel 47. The challenges are pretty fun, I enjoyed trying to figure out how to get the golden acorns without assistance, however, this can be a good thing and bad. On one hand, using initiative to solve the puzzle is truly rewarding, but also some of the tasks were so frustrating to figure out without a little hint. Some tasks do luckily offer a hint on how to access a certain part but not enough sometimes to help you progress more easily. I’m not a big puzzle game fan however Squirrel With A Gun made solving them ultimately fun in the end rather than a chore.

When I first booted up Squirrel With A Gun I found the controls a little bit difficult to get a hold of but worked out that the point is, you are a Squirrel. Squirrels run around at an agile speed constantly, once you get a gun the controls became a little more grounded, so it all made sense in the end, I loved how it handled. My experience reminded me of Goat Simulator the game is a little bit janky in places but overall it’s just a good laugh and a good time. Some issues need to be patched out like getting stuck underground though the rest of it is a bunch of fun. Squirrel With A Gun is about fun it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it lets you be a squirrel on a mission to take down the evil agents and you can choose any way to do it. You can also rob people at gunpoint for acorns and then perform fatality like finishers on NPCs depending on what weapon you have equipped. Different weapons each reward you with many different finishers and it has to be one of the best parts of the game.

Squirrel With A Gun runs on Unreal Engine 5 which performs smoothly throughout and looks pretty good, especially the squirrel, it looks stunning. The environment recreates its themes well the western area is a desert with cactuses, a saloon and cowboys, the wedding reception recreates a nice wedding scene while the squirrel runs around causing mischief with only acorns on the mind the themes are designed brilliantly. All this is fun-spirited the cutscenes are laugh-out-loud funny and designed so well especially the cutscenes before the bosses. My only complaint is a lot of the music is very similar and loops over and over it would have been nice for some other tracks while bolting around the streets.

Verdict

Squirrel With A Gun is a fun game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, you go in and you’re set for a good and silly time. From collecting items to its creative boss battles, there’s a lot of fun to be had, though the damn tank, DAMN THE TANK! It isn’t an overly long game but what it packs in is engaging and addictive, it is one of those games you will want to see through 100% and I love games like that. While the game does feature a lot of puzzles which I don’t usually enjoy, it does it in a way that is super rewarding and engaging so it never becomes a chore. The cutscenes are some of the most hilarious I have seen in a game for years, I urge you to watch them. I had a great time and hope for more from Squirrel With A Gun in the future.
