Wild Country developed by Lost Native is a cute and cosy city-building, card game now available on the Steam Next Fest demo event! The lovely folk at Lost Native provided a demo code for us to check out! Here are our impressions so far.

Wild Country features a unique blend of deck-building and city-building with cute little cosy animals fighting you to build the best city and make the most money. You are introduced to the mechanics by a fairly simple and easy tutorial that shows you all of the mechanics in a few easy steps. Each card you play offers a buff for you that helps you earn the money. I may have gotten a little obsessed with building taco trucks. Wild Country will throw curve balls your way ranging from earthquakes, snowstorms, and rebellious racoons. After the first battle, you’ll explore a wonderfully designed park full of animals with unique personalities from an angry duck to a fairly chill tortoise. The park in which you explore is full of colour and life and provides a nice little mix from the strategic gameplay of the battles. While the game isn’t my usual go-to genre, I found myself getting really addicted to it, the relaxing feel to the game just drew me in. For collector fans, Wild Country features lots of items to collect and customise your animals to your liking.

The graphic design reminds me of those Saturday morning cartoons, a unique hand-drawn kind of style which I am here for. Throughout the game, you’ll meet an array of characters each with unique designs copying well-known animals and they’re modelled quite well, I really want to be the little duck! Music in the game is reminiscent of your usual cosy game, with some chill vibes just to relax to nothing too chaotic. It was enjoyable playing the game along the relaxing tracks. The animals are all voiced similarly to Animal Crossing which I personally thought was quite funny, especially the duck who kept critiquing me. We also have to talk about the opening card animation, I really loved the way it makes you interact with the cards to rip it open, it almost copies that feel when you open a deck in real life, what a wonderful little detail.

The Wild Country demo is pretty good so far, it’s not my usual genre, but I’ll give anything a go and I’m glad the good people at ICO reached out for me to try it. I am enjoying seeing the progress of the game. Cosy games seem to be quite a hit recently and we’re always checking out any new titles we find. I found this game so relaxing to play which is surprising for a strategy game. In most strategy games you really need to focus on and concentrate yet this one is one that is so easy to learn and get into. Even on a day when I have brain fog, I can still focus on it no matter what. I will definitely be playing the full release when available.
